IELTS Photo Size Requirements & Generator
IELTS test centers accept either the ICAO 35x45mm format or the US-style 2x2" format, but the registration portal enforces a strict 200KB file size regardless of which you use. This tool handles both.

Frequently asked questions
- What size and resolution does IELTS / TOEFL Exam Registration Photo require?
- Your photo must be between 413x531px and 600x600px (35x45mm), at 300 DPI or higher. Photo & PDF Desk sets these values automatically during processing, so you never have to calculate pixels-per-millimeter by hand.
- What background does my photo need?
- The portal requires a plain white or light grey background, with even lighting and no shadows on the face or backdrop. Use the "Make background white" tool in the editor if your photo's background isn't clean enough.
- What's the maximum file size?
- The file must stay under 200KB, and above 10KB — files smaller than that are usually rejected as suspiciously over-compressed. Photo & PDF Desk's adaptive quality step finds the highest quality that still fits this budget.
- Do I need to crop the photo myself?
- No — upload any reasonably sharp, front-facing photo and use the interactive cropper with the built-in head-position guide to frame it correctly. The tool enforces the required head height (65%-80% of the frame) and eye-line position as you adjust.
- Does it matter which of the two accepted sizes I choose for IELTS?
- No — the British Council, IDP, and most test centers accept either the 35x45mm or 2x2" format interchangeably. The strict part is the 200KB file size ceiling and image clarity, which this tool enforces regardless of which size you pick.
